A trip outside Cattolica
Discovering the hinterland
Between villages and fortresses
Spending a holiday in Cattolica is also the best way to discovering the romagna hinterland with its villages and Malatesta fortresses, pretty medieval towns and its green hills overlooking the sea.
Gradara
Small hamlet of love
Its walls rest gently on the border between two lands, Romagna and Le Marche, which are reflected in its cuisine and architecture.
But this village guards a large castle, stage of the tormented love story between Paolo and Francesca, also narrated by Dante in his Divine Comedy.
One of the unmissable events of the summer in Gradara is the Assault on the Castle.
San Marino
The world's smallest republic
The Republic of San Marino, on Mount Titano, dominates the entire area and, from Piazza della Libertà, offers a breathtaking panorama. It is pleasant to spend an entire day here and have the opportunity to visit both the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art and the State Museum. Fashion and shopping lovers will also find their realm here: there are numerous shops and outlets with brand-name clothes at bargain prices.
Santarcangelo di Romagna
Charm and mystery
Just a few kilometres from Rimini, it is one of the most beautiful villages in the area. Rich in monuments such as the famous Campanone, the Rocca Malatestiana and the Arch of Pope Clement XIV, it is also characterised by a true underground world, made up of caves and tunnels that were once used to store food or take refuge during sieges.
Ace in the hole: the historic centre is full of restaurants and atmospheric venues where you can enjoy all the goodness of Romagna at the table.
